Admissions

We are pleased you and your physician have chosen Dallas Regional Medical Center. We know you may have questions, and encourage you to discuss your hospital stay with your physician before you arrive. Below are some frequently asked questions about preparing for surgery that will answer some of your questions.

How to Prepare for Surgery or Procedure

  • Before you undergo an operation or procedure, make sure that your doctor has explained it to you. Make sure that you understand how it will help you, what the risks and possible outcomes are, and what other types of treatment may be available.

  • Make sure you, your doctor, and your surgeon agree on exactly what will be done during the operation.

  • Tell your surgeon, anesthesiologist, and nurses if you have allergies. Tell them if you’ve ever had a bad reaction to anesthesia.

  • Questions to ask are:
    • Who will have charge of my care while I’m in the hospital?
    • How long will the surgery last?
    • What will happen after surgery?
    • How can I expect to feel during recovery?
    • How long will I be in the hospital?
    • Will I need a ride home from the hospital?
    • Will I need any prescriptions or supplies from the pharmacy?
    • Will I need home care nurses or any type of therapy at home?
    • What will my physical limits be and for how long?
    • When should I make a follow-up appointment?

  • Remember that the purpose of tests and procedures is to help the doctor understand your condition and offer better medical care. However, you have a right to refuse any test, procedure, or surgery.

Pre-Operative Verification

If you should have surgery, we conduct a pre-operative verification process. We may mark the place needing surgery or we may ask you to mark the arm, leg, etc. that needs surgery . We take a “time-out” immediately before starting the procedure to verify the correct patient and the correct procedure to be performed.
